Setting Up an OverDrive Account

Patrons who download the OverDrive app no longer need to get an Adobe account to authorize their devices, but they are now asked to set up an OverDrive account. This account is separate from the account they use when they login to our OverDrive system. The OverDrive account allows synchronizing multiple devices. Users can set up the account using their Facebook account information or by entering an e-mail address and password.

When they sign up, this option appears: E-mail me recommendations and trending titles. This is unchecked by default.

If they opt in, they will receive occasional e-mail messages. Here’s an example of the first part of one of these messages, which contains helpful tips on new features:

The message also includes cover images for some popular new titles under the heading Check out these great reads from your library and OverDrive. These are not necessarily titles that we own.

Selecting one of these titles takes you to the title on OverDrive’s public site, where they can learn more about the title and also select the options to Borrow or Buy.

If they select Borrow, OverDrive will find copies that belong to nearby libraries. If NOBLE doesn’t own a copy, the nearest system to show up may be Boston, another Massachusetts consortia, or even someplace out of state. It’s even more confusing because the list shows individual libraries rather than systems, so if the Boston Public Library owns a copy, the list will include every Boston branch. Even if NOBLE does own a copy, we may not have the nearest copy — for example, if Merrimack students may find the system telling them about nearby MVLC libraries, not more relevant NOBLE information.

If they select Buy, the system will display a list of online retailers:
