Getting Started With Evergreen Serials

Steps for setting up serials in Evergreen:

  • Make sure that staff who work with serials have the proper permissions associated with their logins. If they do not have these permission or are not sure of their permissions, please contact Michele Morgan.
  • Create at least one copy template for serials. Remember to include your library as part of the template name. See documentation
  • Start setting up subscriptions. Note: if you want to check in issues retrospectively, set up your test issuance using an appropriate publication date from the past. Remember: if you have no items attached to a serial bib record, you will need to add a unit (copy) when receiving your first issue. You may also add a copy using the copy editor.
  • Check in any issues that were received after May 18th at 6:00 PM even if they were previously checked in to Milleenium if:
    1. You want to update the holdings summary in Evergreen or
You have attached item records to these serials in Millennium.

Other things to consider:

  • The Evergreen catalog search filter for formats does not include “periodical.” Sometimes a title or ISSN search returns several potential hits. The most efficient way to search for serials may be to use the TCN (the bib record #). It may be helpful to generate a list of serial titles and bib record numbers from Millennium to aid in searching.
  • To generate predictions for all current subscriptions you will need to identify the publication date (and the enumeration (if appropriate) of the last issue received. Some libraries are going to the shelves to record this information. Some libraries may wish to have Millennium running on their machines as they set up subscriptions in order to access this information.
