Editing Holding Codes

In some cases, when you add an individual, or “special,” issuance without using a pattern code, you will get a very long “network error” when you receive that issuance. This error appears to result from an incomplete holding code for these issuances.

For example, in the following screenshot (NOTE: click on the image to enlarge), the issuances that are highlighted have slightly different holding codes than the others, which were generated from a pattern code.  NOTE: these differences are not always visible, because the full holding code is often cut off in the display.  However, in these two cases, you can easily see that the holding code is shorter–so, something is missing!

To fix an incorrect holding code, follow the steps below — or watch this screencast — and you should be able to receive the problematic issuance(s).

  1. Go to Alternate Serial Control
  2. Identify the issuance that you cannot receive.
  3. “Double-click” on the issuance preceding it to display information about this issuance.  Note: be sure to double-click on the row, not on the  blue link.
  4. Scroll to the end of the “holding code” box and note the data that appears after these entries: “x”,”AUTOGEN”.   In this example, the holding code for the November issue looks like this: [“4″,”1″,”8″,”1.6″,”i”,”2012″,”j”,”10″,”x”,”AUTOGEN”,”a”,5]
  5. Next, look at the holding code for the issuance following your new issuance.  In this example, the holding code for the December issue looks like this: [“4″,”1″,”8″,”1.7″,”i”,”2012″,”j”,”12″,”x”,”AUTOGEN”,”a”,6]
  6. Next, edit the holding code for your new issuance by adding the letter “a” and the number “5” after “AUTOGEN.”  Your holding code now should look like this: [“4″,”1″,”8″,”1″,”i”,”2012″,”j”,”11″,”a”,5]  Note: you will almost always need to add the letter “a”, but the number that you choose should either fall between or equal the previous and subsequent issuance that were generated using the pattern code.  In the above example, therefore, I could have entered “6” instead of “5.”
  7. Click “Save”
  8. Go to Serial Control View and click on “Refresh”
  9. Receive your serial issuance
