Year-End Statistics

Circulation Totals

Circulation totals are broken down by format type to match up as closely as possible with the formats in the Board of Library Commissioners' Annual Report Information Survey (ARIS). The formats were derived from the Item Format in the Geac system and the ITYPE in the Innopac. If the Item Format or ITYPE was ambiguous, the statistics were counted under miscelleneous (for example, Special Collection).

NOTE: checkouts to patrons with a PTYPE of "Special Patron" or "DELETE Patron" were subtracted from the ADULT/YA totals. These checkouts were for internal use only and should not be counted as a checkout on the ARIS form.

This corresponds to Section A of the Circulation Information section of the ARIS form.

You can view the System Totals (or the Excel spreadsheet), or select a library below to view complete detailed reports.

Interlibrary Loans in Table A

Some circs counted above were actually ILL's provided to other libraries and not circs directly to library patrons. On the Geac system, these were checkouts to patrons whose SCAT code was between 3000 and 3999 (inclusive). On the Innovative system, these were checkouts to patrons with a PTYPE of "ILL Patron". Checkouts to these ILL cards are done to track where an item is located when it is routed off the system. Some of these checkouts were to other NOBLE libraries to fill book group requests where the requesting library did not place holds, but asked that multiple copies of a title be sent to them.

This corresponds to section B of the Circulation Information section of the ARIS form.

Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary loan statistics were gathered from 4 different reports that were run on both the Geac and Innovative systems. These reports include:

Net Lending Offset Progam Statistics

The Net Lender form for the MBLC requires that you look at your ILL statistics by region. The ILL statistics above were reworked to show loans to and borrows from region members. In cases where the loan or borrow was ambiguous (ILL to Hospitals), the stats were deleted. Also, loans to or from libraries that are not members of a Massachusetts region were deleted. For these reasons these statistics are slightly lower than the above ILL statistics.

Nonresident Circulation Transactions

Non-Resident borrowing statistics are taken from the Reciprocal Borrowing Report produced by the Geac system and the Circ Activity Report (sorted by RECIPROCAL) of the Innovative system. On the Geac system, reciprocal borrowing was determined by the agency code of the patron's record. On the Innovative system, reciprocal borrowing is determined by the code in the RECIPROCAL field of the patron's record.

This corresponds to section D of the Circulation Information section of the ARIS form.

Holdings Information as of 6/30/2000

Holdings information is broken down by format type to match up as closely as possible with the formats in the ARIS form. The formats were derived from the ITYPE in the Innopac. If the Item Format or ITYPE was ambiguous, the statistics were counted under miscelleneous (for example, Special Collection). Cross Tab reports (ITYPE by Location) were used to gather these statistics.

The categories for ADULT/YA and CHILDREN are derived from the location code in the item records. Codes ending with an "a" are included in the ADULT totals; codes ending with a "j" are included in the CHILDREN totals. College library reports retain the original location code and are not broken down by Adult/Children.

For periodical holdings, the system is only able to count issues. Since the ARIS form requests that you report bibliographic volumes and not the number of issues, the number was replaced with "n/c". I did not remove the number of periodical issues in college reports, but assume that volume information and not issue information is required on the IPEDS as well. College libraries may need to adjust this.

This corresponds to section A of the Holdings Information section of the ARIS form.

Number of Registered Borrowers

The number of registered borrowers as of 6/30/2000 is counted several different ways. The report counts borrowers by the RECIPROCAL field, the HOME LIBRARY field, and by barcode prefix. For the ARIS, public libraries should use the RECIPROCAL figure as this most closely represents residents of your community.

Guest patrons are also included in the count of registered borrowers. Guest patrons are those patrons who do not live in a NOBLE community or have no affiliation with a college library.

This corresponds to section B of the Services Information section of the ARIS form.
