Saberhagen, Fred, The Face of Apollo (Volume 1, Book of the Gods)
Yes, it is derivative and the almost endless repetition of the main character's musings does wear on one's nerves; but Fred Saberhagen puts a nice twist on the mythology of the ancient pantheon of deities. Known for his Berserker and Sword series, Saberhagen now tackles ancient Roman and Greek mythology as he ponders who begat whom--the gods--humans or humans--the gods.
You like his characters and his outlook of the gods who need a human host to realize their powers to their fullest extent. I found myself sticking to the bitter end because I really wanted to see where the author was taking Jeremy/Apollo.
If you enjoy mythology and want to explore a humanized version of Apollo, Hades, Vulcan, Circe and Loki, this book will amuse. The plot and action sequences are the usual fantasy fare.
