Books By the Lake December 17, 2008

The next gathering of Beebe Library’s book discussion group, Books By the Lake, is on December 17, 2008 when the book group will meet for a potluck at a group member’s home and discuss Diane Setterfield’s The Thirteenth Tale.

When her health begins failing, the mysterious author Vida Winter decides to let Margaret Lea, a biographer, write the truth about her life, but Margaret needs to verify the facts since Miss Winter has been falsifying her life story and her identity for more than 60 years. Facing imminent death and feeling an unexplainable connection to Margaret, Miss Winter begins to spin a haunting, suspenseful tale of an old English estate, a devastating fire, twin girls, a governess, and a ghost. As Margaret carefully records Vida’s tale, she ponders her own family secrets. Her research takes her to the English moors to view a mansion in ruins and to discover an unexpected ending to Vida’s story. Readers will be mesmerized by this story-within-a-story tinged with the eeriness of Rebecca and the willfulness of Jane Eyre. The author skillfully keeps the plot moving by unfurling a new twist in each chapter and leaves no strand untucked at the surprising and satisfying conclusion. A wholly original work told in the vein of all the best gothic classics. Lovers of books about book lovers will be enthralled with The Thirteenth Tale.

Books By the Lake November 19, 2008

The next gathering of Beebe Library’s book discussion group, Books By the Lake, is on November 19, 2008 when the book group will discuss Lee Smith’s On Agate Hill.

The Boston Globe called On Agate Hill, “as lyrical and haunting as an Appalachian ballad.” The time period that Lee Smith knowledgeably sets this involving novel within encompasses the years between the end of the Civil War and the dawn of the twentieth century; her setting is North Carolina. The novel is composed of real documents, such as diary entries, letters, and court documents, and the author fashions, in gradual steps through time and from the telling perspectives of different individuals, the riveting character Molly Petree. She is an orphan at war’s end, dependent on being taken in by family, but she isn’t the type to stay at the mercy of anyone. Her pluck, fortitude, resilience, and wisdom prompt her not only to take things as they come during this disorderly time in the South but also to dictate her own fortune and make a life in which she can find some peace. This novel of treachery and resolution provides an intimate picture of the Reconstruction era, observed through the lens not of politicians and generals but of the common folk upon whose shoulders the actual reconstruction of a ravaged land rested.

The tough codes of Revere’s working-class streets mix with the warmth and affirmation of family to form a background against which Merullo’s later wanderings are always set. 2003 Massachusetts Book Award for Non-Fiction.

Book Groups Are Back!

After a summer hiatus, all of Beebe Library’s book discussion groups are set to get back into full swing starting this month.

The next gathering of Books by the Lake is on September 17, 2008 when the group will discuss “Mrs. Kimble” and “Baker Towers” by Jennifer Haigh. “Mrs. Kimble” follows twenty-five years in the life of charismatic opportunist Ken Kimble as seen through the eyes of his three wives: Birdie, who struggles with his abandonment; heiress Joan, who is recovering from a personal loss; and Dinah, who suffers from an unhappy past.

“Baker Towers” concerns the decade following World War II, which becomes one of tragedy, excitement, and unexpected change for the five Novak children and the residents of
their western Pennsylvania community of company houses, church festivals, union squabbles, and firemen’s parades. Both novels convey a theme of illusion versus reality as well as other potent relationship matters.

Books by the Lake meets on the third Wednesday of each month, September through June. This book discussion group combines the enjoyment of reading a single title and the desire to share insights, observations, and feelings about that one book with others who have read it. So many novels create a need in some readers to share their reactions about the book with others, as well as an opportunity to personally grow from the discussions of related themes and common experiences.

All adults enthusiastic about reading and talking about what they have read are invited to attend as often as they can. The conversations are lively, intelligent, and insightful - come and join us! For a full schedule of titles for this year, go to our web site at
www.wakefieldlibrary.org/book-discussion-groups/books-by-the-lake/ or pick up a flyer at the Reference Desk.

Supper Sleuths, a mystery discussion group, meets every second Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. to discuss mysteries of every genre and type. Feel free to bring your own snack or brown bag lunch with you to the meeting. Supper Sleuths will next meet on Tuesday, October 14, when the group will discuss Louis Bayard’s “The Pale Blue Eye.”

The Senior Center Book Group meets regularly at the John J. McCarthy Senior Center on Converse Street, with a Beebe Library staff member leading the discussion. For more information contact the Senior Center or call Beebe Library at 781-246-6334.
