Shelfsitters Using LCHKIN Field
Here is the basic formula for producing a report of items in a particular area of your collection that have been sitting on the shelf without circulating since a particular date..
The first steps are to name the file, choose Store Record Type Items, and select the range for your search. This is usually a particular Dewey or LC classification range, but could also be a review file of items.
In this example, we’re looking for items that have been sitting on the shelf without circulating since 01-01-2001. To find these, we actually need several lines of search conditions :
- Item Location = [yours] — Choose your own location code
- Item Status = - — This excludes items with statuses like in transit, on holdshelf and storage, which wouldn’t be sitting on the shelf, as well as items with a Library Use Only, which don’t circulate
- Item Due Date = [blank] — This line excludes items that are currently checked out. (Just don’t enter a date to get the blank.)
- Item LCHKIN Less Than or Equal To 01-01-2001 — The LCHKIN field is the take that the item was last checked in, and so it’s the date that determines how long an item has been sitting on the shelf without circulating. In this example, we’re using 01-01-2001, but you can specify any date. If an item has never circulated, it’s LCHKIN date will be blank, which the system considers to be less than 01-01-2001 (or any date.)
- Item Created Less Than or Equal To 01-01-2001 — This excludes recently-added items which haven’t circulated yet, and therefore have a blank LCHKIN.
