The Swampscott Public Library wishes to provide the best possible service to the Town of Swampscott. The library will be an integral part of the community, useful to the entire town. We will provide information to individuals, town agencies, local businesses, and anyone else who needs our resources. We will help preserve the town’s heritage and progress toward the future, maintaining both a composite of historical documents and up-to-date town reports. We will share resources with the school department. We will support the educational endeavors of all townspeople. We will continue our association with NOBLE and NMRLS in order to regionalize as many of our services as possible. We will support the educational endeavors of all townspeople. The library will be an institution where all will feel welcome and served.
Swampscott residents and visitors of all ages have access to current information and recreational materials and programs at the Swampscott Public Library. The Swampscott Public Library provides to its users the information they want, in a timely manner; opportunities and support for lifelong learning; and curriculum support for students for local schools and home-based educators. We are committed to providing educational support, current titles, and basic information to the townspeople.
We will support all of those students who are enrolled in a formal program of education or who are pursuing their education through a program of home schooling. We are committed to maintaining a collection of accurate and useful reference materials that will help all Swampscott citizens attain their personal, educational, and professional goals. The staff will be responsive to the variety of needs of its townspeople from early childhood learning into grade school and through high school and beyond.
The library will help to fulfill community residents’ appetite for information about popular cultural and social trends and their desire for satisfying recreational experiences. The titles or topics that fulfill the needs of our patrons will be provided in many different formats and media such as books, newspapers, magazines and audio and video.
The library will supply general information on a broad range of subjects. It will answer questions on a broad array of topics related to work, school, and personal life. The library will maintain a significant collection of historical data, especially that which is pertinent to the town of Swampscott. The library will become a clearinghouse for current information on community issues and services. We will also supply the townspeople with tax information, forms, and at specific times provide space for volunteers to help with tax preparation. The library will continue to employ an educated staff, willing and able to determine user needs and locate the information that satisfies those needs. Internet access as well as print, audio, and video media will be available.
The value of the library and the strength of its resources are enhanced by its staff. Therefore, the staff of the Swampscott Public Library is committed to the accomplishment of all of our goals by providing friendly, courteous, prompt and knowledgeable service.
All patrons must sign-up (with their library card or proper identification) for a one-hour time slot of computer usage. They may use the computer beyond this time if at least one computer with Internet access is unoccupied, but they must relinquish the workstation if all Internet computers are currently occupied.
Patrons may sign-up for only one time slot during any given day, and patrons may not switch to a different computer unless the computer they are sitting at is deemed “unfix-able” for the duration of their one-hour time slot.
The library cannot provide email accounts.
Printing will be charged after the first two pages. The cost is $.10 per page.
A person who damages equipment will be responsible for the cost required to return the equipment to proper operation.
The staff reserves the right to ask patrons to abort his/her search if it is displaying offensive or hostile material. This right is necessitated by the location of the Internet workstations and the possible proximity of children.
Parents must monitor their children’s use of the Internet.
The use of the Internet access through the Swampscott Public Library for illegal purposes or to transmit threatening, obscene, or harassing materials is strictly forbidden.
Materials obtained from the Internet may be subject to copyrighted laws.
For the safety of our children and the comfort of all of our patrons, the Swampscott Public Library strives to create a warm, inviting, fun and safe environment for children. We offer many programs and services that encourage children to develop a love of books, reading and learning. The safety and well being of children at the library is a serious concern, therefore the library maintains this policy:
1. All children under the age of 7 must have an adult or a responsible person 13 years or older with them at all times while they are anywhere in the Library.
2. No library staff member is authorized to accept responsibility for the supervision or care for any minor child left alone or unattended at the Library at any time.
3. No child under the age of 7 will be allowed on the computers without a parent or guardian seated with them.
All Minor Children
1. Parents or guardians should be responsible for having their children picked up by the time or before the Library is closed
2. Should it be determined that a child under age 14 has been left at the Library at closing time, every attempt will be made to contact the child’s parents or other family member. The Swampscott Police will be called if no one can be reached. Staff members will remain after hours with an unattended child until the parent, guardian, or police arrive.
3. Staff members staying with the child will be compensated for time spent waiting, by the town.
4. Staff members should fill out an incident report and leave it for the director when the police are called.
5. Library staff members will not transport children from the Library to any other location.
6. Parents, guardians, or caretakers who violate the rules stated above risk having their library privileges restricted or revoked.
