The entire family can stop by the library on Monday evening, December 21st at 6:00 p.m. and join in the celebration of the shortest day of the year. There will be a showing of the movie The Polar Express, a craft project, hot chocolate and cider and cookies.

Admission is free, but tickets are required for this event.
Tickets will be available at the Reference Desk beginning Wednesday, December 9th.

Pajama Party–Jan Brett’s “The Mitten”

Tuesday, December 1 at 6:30 p.m. we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Jan Brett’s wonderful book, The Mitten as well as the author’s birthday. Come and listen to this story and other Jan Brett tales and create a craft project. Refreshements will be served and no registration is needed. All ages are welcome.
In honor of her birthday Ms. Brett’s will be our Author of the month.

SCHOOLJAM USA BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITION

Teen Battle of the Bands Contest Aimed at Encouraging Music Making Among Teens and
Helping School Music Programs

[Marblehead, Swampscott, Wilmington MA], November 2, 2009— NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, has selected the Jessica Prouty Band of Marblehead, Swampscott, and Wilmington High Schools to move on to the semi finals of the SchoolJam USA teen battle of the bands competition.

The nationwide contest, sponsored by NAMM, is designed to encourage teen bands across the United States to demonstrate their musical talents and enjoy the many proven benefits of making music.

The Jessica Prouty Band will be included in the Online voting portion of the competition, which begins November 1, 2009, at www.schooljamusa.com. The general public is encouraged to visit the site and vote for their favorite band. The top two bands in five designated regions that receive the most votes will be announced on Dec. 19, 2009, and will be invited to the live SchoolJam USA battle of the bands finals held at the NAMM Show on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif. The Jessica Prouty Band is competing for one of the top two slots in the Northeast region.

The SchoolJam USA Battle of the Bands helps highlight the best and most talented teens across the country, while supporting the bands’ school music education programs. The winning band will receive $750 toward new musical equipment and could win a trip to perform at the SchoolJam Germany live finals in Frankfurt, Germany, at the MusikMesse trade fair. The top band’s school music program will also receive $5,000 toward new musical equipment purchased at their local NAMM Member retailer of choice. The competition is sponsored with the help of MENC, the national association for music education; the Music Education National Conference; Music For All; the John Lennon Educational Bus; SchoolJam and InTune Monthly magazine.

HOLIDAY HOURS FOR NOVEMBER & DECEMBER

Thanksgiving: Library will close at 5:00pm on Wednesday, November 25th and remained closed on Thursday, November 26th.

Christmas: The Library will be open Thursday, December 24th from 10:00am -1:00pm and remain closed, Friday December 25th & Sat., December 26th.

New Year’s: Library will be open Thursday, December 31st from 10:00am-1:00pm and remain closed on Friday, January 1st and Saturday, January 2nd.

Friends of the Library Membership Renewals

We are shifting our membership year from a calendar year to October 1st through September 30th. We ask that you consider renewing your membership as soon as possible. If you did not receive a membership envelope in the mail, please pick one up on your next visit to the library. All memberships created or renewed prior to September 1, 2009 will be honored for the remainder of this calendar year. Anyone who has joined or renewed their membership after September 1, 2009 will have an active membership through September 30, 2010. We greatly appreciate your understanding and support as we make this transition.

Author of the Month: Avi

Avi was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1937. We can’t tell you much about his unique name except to say that his sister, Emily, so dubbed him at age one and it stuck. When he was young teachers told Avi that his writing didn’t make any sense. Little did they know he had dysgraphia, a learning disability that makes writing difficult. Yet, with boundless talent and the encouragement of an understanding tutor, Avi kept writing.
He lives in Denver, Colorado and he was once a children’s librarian. He didn’t begin writing books until he had children of his own. Today, he is the prize-winning author of Cripsin, the Cross of Lead (Newbery Award for 2003), The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Nothing But the Truth (both Newbery Honor books, and dozens of other popular books for young readers.

Teen Read Week is a nation-wide program sponsored by the American Library Association. This year’s theme was Read Beyond Reality@ your library!
Thank you to everyone who came to the Pastel Painting Workshop or to the Indulgent Evening. It’s nice to see kids leaving the library after having fun.

A special THANK YOU to Whole Foods Inc. for donating delicious treats and waters for our Indulgent Evening. We appreciate their generous support.

If you haven’t been by the library yet, you can still pick a treasure from our treasure basket on the table in the Teen Area. You can also pick up a coupon to Clear your Swampscott Public Library fines. BUT the treasures and coupons will disappear on Monday, October 26th.

STORYBOOK FUN

Mondays & Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m.
October 5 to December 16.
Ages 2 to 5
A story time program that is perfect for groups of siblings or friends, this activity consists of stories, songs and finger plays and action rhymes designed to encourage early literacy. Librarians will present 20 to 30 minutes of stories and songs that will tickle, delight, and amuse. After Storybook Fun the children are encouraged to play and socialize. All ages can join in the fun!
All children attending this program must be accompanied by a parent or other adult who will sit with them and participate in the activities. No registration is required.

OPEN PLAY GROUP
Fridays at 10:00 a.m.
September 18 to December 18
Ages 6 to 24 months
Parents with children ages 6 months to 2 years are invited to come to the library for an open play group. Drop in any Friday for a casual visit. This is a great opportunity for new moms to connect with other families.

Knitting Club – NEW DAY!

Join the Needlers a knitting group at the Swampscott Public Library. This group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 10:30a.m. The November meeting will be Wednesday, November 25th. Crocheters are welcome to join our group. We make our own projects or items to be donated to charity. Members can be beginners or experts.

History Buffs – NEW DAY!

The local history group led by Lou Gallo will meeting on the first Friday of every month. The November meeting will be Friday, November 6th at 10:00am. Anyone interested in the history of the town is welcome to attend.

Dinner Detectives

The Dinner Detectives, the library’s mystery book group, will meet at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 3rd to discuss Kidnapping and Mysteries. New members are always welcome.

Book Group

The November book will be Skeletons at the Feast: a novel by Chris Bohjalian. The group will meet on Tuesday, November 17th at 7:00pm.

Monday at the Movies

– NEW GROUP!
The Swampscott Public Library is presenting a series of free movies, followed by a discussion of the film. Everyone is invited to attend and bring along a friend. Refreshments will be served during the presentation. The first meeting will be Monday, November 9th at 1:00pm, and the film will be Secret Life of Bees.
