The Getty Provenance Index
Description The two databases available from the Provenance Index are Sale Catalogues and Sale Contents. They represent a collaborative effort between the Provenance Index; the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.; The Mellon Centre in London; and the Frick Art Reference Library in New York. Sale Catalogues consists of information about British sale catalogues from 1801 to 1825, including a general description of each sale (2,812 sales are included) and a list of where copies of the catalogues are available and how they are annotated. Sale Contents, dedicated to the paintings listed in the sale catalogues, can be searched by artist's name, title, seller, price, buyer, etc. It contains 173,637 records. This information appears in print form in a multi-volume series, Index of Paintings Sold in the British Isles during the Nineteenth Century. A table of catalogue locations and their abbreviations used in the Sale Catalogues and Sale Contents databases is available.
