PRESS
RELEASE
The Boston Globe’s investigative reporter Sean P. Murphy, who has written
hundreds of stories on the Big Dig, will give an illustrated presentation on the
$15 billion project, at the Saugus Public Library on Tuesday, March 25 at 7:00
p.m.
The talk, which will be followed by a question and answer period, is
sponsored by the library and is free to the public. All are
welcome.
In his talk, Mr. Murphy will address such Big Dig topics as its cost and
financing, engineering achievements, and its politics and
personalities.
He will discuss the extraordinary
coalition which made the Big Dig a reality in the first place; the public
deception of its cost; and the curious management role played by the private
sector consortium Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff. He will also explain the
persistence of hundreds of leaks in the tunnels; the tragic ceiling collapse
that killed a woman in 2006; and the stunning amount of borrowing by the state
to pay for the Big Dig.
Mr. Murphy has been a reporter and editor at the Globe since
1987.
