Online Databases

Residents of Northeast Massachusetts have access to high-quality local, state, and regionally funded databases of full-text periodicals, health and business resources, biographical and literary databases. Select a database from one or more of the categories below. When prompted, input your 14-digit public library patron barcode (on your library card) and begin searching.

Academic Research

• Academic OneFile : peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources.
• Academic Search Elite : full text for more than 1,500 peer-reviewed titles.
• Educators Reference Complete : contains more than 1,100 periodicals and 200 reports from the U.S. Department of Education.
• Expanded Academic ASAP : this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines.
• ERIC: a selection of more than 450 full-text academic journals in education.
• Professional Development Collection : collection of full-text education journals designed for professional educators.

Auto & Home Improvement (Salem residency required for remote access)

• Auto Repair Reference Center : information on most manufacturers of domestic and imported vehicles.
• Home Improvement Reference Center : online tool for home improvement assistance.
• Small Engine Repair Reference Center : online resource for small engine repair assistance.

Recreation (Salem residency required for remote access)

• Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center : covers full-text content for many of the most popular hobbies, crafts and recreation activities today..

Business Research

• Business Source Premier : includes company and industry profiles, country reports, and market research reports.
• General BusinessFile ASAP : research all business and management topics.
• Morningstar Online (Salem residency required for remote access) : in depth information and ratings on mutual funds. Online access is restricted to one user at a time; therefore, if it's in use please try again. This replaces the print edition of Morningstar.

Career Guidance (Salem residency required for remote access)

• Ferguson's Career Guidance Center : contains career information, with job and industry profiles, career forecasting, a monthly newsletter, college planning and financial aid information, and cover letter and resume help.

Consumers

• Consumers' Checkbook (available in library only) : this nonprofit website rates local service firms and provides unbiased consumer rating and information on local auto repair shops, home repair services, health care providers, and more.

Downloadable Audiobooks

• Overdrive : online catalog of downloadable audiobooks available with titles available in MP3 and WMA formats.

Encyclopedia

• Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia : provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.
• Grolier Online : includes the Grolier Encyclopedia as well as the New book of Knowledge which is appropriate for younger children.

• ¡Informe! (Revistas en Español)™ : indexing, full text, and images of popular Hispanic magazines, and full text pamphlets on a variety of topics, such as health care.

• Ancestry (available in library only) : database of genealogy information including census data, passenger lists, and birth, marriage and death records.

• Gale Virtual Reference Library : provides access to encyclopedias and specialized reference books.
• General Reference Center Gold : general interest database that integrates a variety of sources - newspapers, reference books, magazines, and trade publications.
• InfoTrac OneFile : a one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics.
• Manuscripts, Archives & Special Collections Directory : a guide and locater for special collections residing in Massachusetts libraries, archives, historical societies and town clerk's offices.
• Massachusetts History Online : contains full-text articles gathered from almost 50 sources that directly relate to MA history.
• Salem Links & Lore : an online collection of information about Salem, Massachusetts that can be searched by keyword or browsed by subject list.
