Salem Public Library is located in the Historic District of Salem, Massachusetts in an 1855 renovated brick mansion originally owned by sea merchant John Bertram. The library is part of the North of Boston Library Exchange (NOBLE), a consortium of 28 public and academic libraries in the surrounding area.
What's New
Coming Soon – a New Library Catalog!
- On Tuesday, May 29th the Salem Public Library, along with all the libraries in the NOBLE network, will have a new library catalog. Migration to the new system will take place over Memorial Day Weekend.
- Salem Public Library will be closed May 26, 27 & 28. There will be no online access to the catalog or your library account during this time.
- You will still have online access from our website to the research databases and downloadable e-books and audiobooks.
- Have you been receiving emails from us? If not, simply login to your online account to add/modify your email address.
- The Spring 2012 Edition [PDF-180KB] of the Salem Public Library Newsletter is available. You will need Adobe Reader to view the Newsletter.
eBooks & Audiobooks — Get your downloadable books from the library! Our Overdrive digital collection includes fiction and nonfiction titles, children and teen selections, and is available in both eBook and audiobook formats. Simply browse, checkout, and download. New titles are constantly being added via NOBLE and can be searched from the NOBLE catalog or directly on Overdrive.
USS Constitution Museum — Go explore “Old Ironsides” and the history behind the nickname. The Salem Public Library now carries passes to the USS Constitution Museum. Reserve your pass to this Boston landmark today. Each pass admits up to 9 people free of charge.
AtoZ World Travel (Salem residency required for remote access) — online access to in-depth travel information for over 175 different countries and 150 world cities including health and medical information, local embassies and consulates, maps, money, language, weather and other travel essentials.
Historic New England — Visit any of Historic New England's 36 properties, Library and Archives across 5 states. Each pass admits one person for free and patrons may borrow 2 passes for a specific day. Call 978-744-0860 for information and reservations.
Zoo New England — Reserve our library pass to Zoo New England for reduced admission to Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo. Pass admits 2 adults and 4 children at $2.00 per person. Call 978-744-0860 for information and reservations.
Salem Links & Lore — Did you know we have a local history wiki? Salem Links & Lore is a virtual vertical file of all-things-Salem. It is constantly being updated by our staff and has links to further information in our catalog. Now you can research (or reminisce) about Salem, MA from home!

Mango Languages (Salem residency required for remote access) — Mango Languages is an online language-learning system teaching actual conversation skills for a wide variety of languages including Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, German, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, and several ESL languages. Remote access available for Salem residents.

NOBLE's NextReads — Do you like to read biographies, history, science, travel adventures, mysteries, fantasy, romance? Whatever your interests, check out our new e-mail newsletter service which will send great book suggestions by email. Each newsletter includes new books that may be of interest and some older ones that you may have missed, with links to the library catalog so you can see what is available and place requests for books you want to read. There are over twenty lists for readers of all ages, and you can preview them all online before subscribing.
