We know that many members of the PA community participate in book groups. But did you know that we can help you gain access to sets of books that you can distribute to the members of your club? Over the summer, the Academy Book Club (ABC) met to discuss Sue Monk Kidd’s The Invention of Wings. This book was very popular this summer, and there were dozens of “hold” requests against the “regular” copies in NOBLE libraries’ collections. The OWHL was able to provide copies of the book to all interested participants by obtaining a “book club kit”—a set of books owned by one of the NOBLE libraries specifically to support reading groups.
If you would like to determine whether a book your group plans to read is available as a kit, do a keyword, catalog search across all NOBLE libraries using the term “book club kit.” This search will produce a list of records with the book title followed by “[club kit]” or “[book club kit].” The record will indicate how many copies are included in the kit, which is checked out as a unit. Most of the kits contain a book group discussion guide.
In addition, even if a kit isn’t available, the OWHL can usually help you acquire sufficient copies from our partner libraries in NOBLE. If this is confusing, just stop by. We are happy to walk you through it!
And in the meantime, if you are in the process of choosing a new title for your club (or for your personal reading pleasure) check out this list of recommendations of “great group reads” produced by the Women’s National Book Association.
