Information on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is also included.

  • U.S. Industry and Trade Outlook 2000 (REF HC101.U54) Provides information on 50 industries and their place in the US economy and in the global marketplace. Trade, economic trends, and forecast tables are included for broad industry groups.

INDUSTRY RATIOS

  • Troy, Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios (REF HF5681.R25A45) Indexed by SIC number, the Almanac gives comparative figures, percentages, and ratios for the industry as a whole and for corporations of similar size. Factors such as net sales, total receipts, cost of operations, compensation of officers, taxes, interest, depreciation, amortization, and benefit plans are included.

  • Dun & Bradstreet, Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios-Desk-Top Edition (REF HF 5681.R25I53) Provides balance-sheet figures and fourteen key performance ratios for 800 lines of business arranged by SIC number.

FINDING COMPANIES WITHIN AN INDUSTRY

  • Dun & Bradstreet Million Dollar Directory (REF HF5035.D8). Lists about 160,000 American public and privately-owned companies that have $9,000,000 or more in sales volume. Reports annual sales, number of employees, divisions, officers and location information.

  • Standard & Poor's Register of Corporations, Directors and Executives ( REF HG4057.A4) Directory of public and privately held corporations in the U.S. Volume 3 contains lists of companies by SIC code.

  • Ward's Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies (REF HG4009.W35) Volumes 1, 2, & 3, alphabetically arranged by company name, provides financial figues, number of employees, SIC and NAICS codes, ticker symbol, and parent names for over 90,000 companies, 90% of them private. Volume 4 is a geographic listing of the companies. Volume 5 gives national rankings of companies by sales within SIC and NAICS codes. Volumes 6 & 7 rank companies by state according to sales and employees within SIC. Volume 8 ranked companies by sales within NAICS. The 100 largest privately held companies, publicly held companies and largest employers are listed.


HANDBOOKS

  • Standard Industrial Classification Manual, 1987 (REF HF 1042.A55) The Standard Industrial Classification Code (SIC Code) is a four-digit system of numerically coding the types of activity conducted in a business. All economic activity is divided into 10 major categories (22 Manufacturing-Textile mill products). The first two digits describe the general nature (2273 Manufacturing-Tufted carpets, rugs).

  • North American Industry Classification System, 1997 (REF HF 1042.5.N674) The NAICS, currently in development, is a six-digit scheme designed to replace the SIC system of categorizing business activity.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic provides many sources of business information and business news. Select "Business". "Industry & Market News" which is subdivided by industry group providing information for over 25 industires.

  • Mergent Online An Internet-accessible subscription service covering 10,000 public companies and their SEC filings and annual reports both international and in the U.S.

  • Wall Street Journal Full-text coverage of the newspaper, updated daily, 1984-current.

  • Boston Globe Full-text coverage from 1980 present.
