Academic ASAP (via INFOTRAC) provides citations and
some full text on a variety of subjects including art and
art history. Do a subject search for your artist, then select
the narrower subdivision criticism, interpretation, technique
etc.
- Academic
Search Premier (via EBSCOhost) provides citations
and some full text on a variety of subjects including art
and art history. Choose subject search from the toolbar at
the top of the screen. Enter your artist's name, e.g. Matisse,
Henri.
- JSTOR
is a searchable digital archive containing back-issues of
core scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences,
and sciences. It contains complete runs of these scholarly
journals, many of which date from the 1800s. Note: the most
recent 3 to 5 years of a journal are not included in this
archive.
- Project MUSE provides 100% full-text, online access to over 300 humanities, arts and social sciences journals from 60 scholarly publishers. Every journal is heavily indexed and peer-reviewed.

- Art History: A Preliminary Handbook by Robert J. Belton at Department of Fine Arts, Okanagan University College, this is an excellent primer to the novice student of the the arts and art history.

- Dictionary of Art Historians this database is designed to give researchers a beginning point to finding information on the background of major art historians of western art history.

- The Thinker Imagebase from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco searchable image and text database of objects from the collections (110,000+ objects) of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
- Archives of American Art (The Smithsonian Institution) thirteen million documents about American visual arts from the 18th century to the 1950s and beyond can be found here. This is a great resource for starting research on American art history.
- AskArt: The Artists Bluebook extensive information about 30,000 American artists.
