Frequently Asked Questions about IM a Librarian
What is IM and how does it work?
IM stands for "Instant Message" and refers to software like AOL Instant Messanger which can be used to have a live conversation with a librarian.
How do I IM a librarian?
Open a new message, enter our buddy name, mcquaderef,
in the To: field, and start typing your message. Or, just add mcquaderef
to your buddy list, double-click on the buddy name to open an IM window,
then type your message.
I don't use Instant Messenger. How do I get
started?
See chat box above -- you don't need to have Yahoo!, AIM, or MSN messengers installed. As long as you can access the library website, you can chat with us.
However, if you prefer to use your own IM client, feel
free to set up a web-based version of AIM
Express. Fill out a quick Web form, choose a screen name, and
start using IM in a few minutes. This service allows you to create
a screen name and to chat without downloading any software.
You can also use the web-based service meebo,
choose a brand of IM, and click on one of the New User links.
I'm having trouble getting the main chat service to work. What do I do about pop-up blockers?
Pop-up blockers must be turned off to use the main
chat service. Refer to these sites that explain how to turn off built-in
pop-up blockers:
SBC
Yahoo Browser Pop-Up Blocker
Yahoo
Toolbar Pop-Up Blocker
Opera
Browser Pop-Up Blocker
Mozilla/Firefox – To change Mozilla’s Pop-Up Blocker preferences,
select Tools > Popup Manager > Allow popups from this site.
Apple Safari – open the preferences and un-check the “Block
pop-up windows” check box under the “Advanced” menu
I'm not affiliated with Merrimack College. Will you answer my question via IM?
We restrict usage to Merrimack College students, faculty, and staff.
Community users are welcome to call the reference desk at 978-837-5215
x4210 or visit the library in person.
Will I have to wait to chat with the librarian?
IM questions are taken in a first-come-first-served
order. You may need to wait if the reference librarian is already
helping someone in person, on the phone, or in another IM chat session.
Please be patient if we don't respond immediately.
If the librarian is busy with one or more patrons, or is otherwise
occupied, you may be asked to send an email using our Email
a Librarian Form. If you would like an IM response, please provide
your Screen Name on the form.
What types of questions may I ask using IM?
You may ask any question you might ask at the reference
desk. Keep in mind that IM is a quick form of communication, so, if
your question requires an in-depth response, the librarian may refer
you to another type of reference service, or follow-up with a phone
call or in-person meeting.
What about privacy?
We will make every effort to protect your privacy. Any information you provide will remain confidential. Meebo's privacy policy is listed here.
For your safety we ask that you do not send sensitive information (such as your password, ID #, etc.) via IM. Also, do not send or download files through IM, as they may contain viruses.
Please feel free to call or email a librarian with any other questions you may have about this service.
