Merrimack College Teacher Preparation Programs

UNDERGRADUATE
The college provides state approved programs leading to initial licensure for elementary teacher grades 1-6; teacher of students with moderate disabilities preK - 8; middle school teacher grades 5-8; and secondary teacher grades 8-12 in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, History, English, Mathematics, Modern Languages and Political Science / Political Philosophy. The curriculum for the teacher licensure program has been approved by the Massachusetts State Department of Education under the new education reform law and the Interstate Certification Compact of the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education. Therefore, students will be able to receive reciprocal teaching licenses in 30 other states.

MASTER'S DEGREE IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
Option I: This M.Ed. program of study is for candidates who have a bachelor's degree, and are interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program are being prepared for the Initial License.
Option II: This M.Ed. program of study is for teachers who currently hold the Initial License and are being prepared for the Professional License. This option requires 36 credits. All courses are three credits unless otherwise specified. (Students may take up to 6 credits before formally applying for acceptance into the program).

MASTER'S AS A TEACHER OF STUDENTS WITH MODERATE DISABILITIES (PreK-8)
Option III: This M.Ed. program of study is for candidates who have a bachelor's degree, and are interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program are being prepared for the Initial License.
Option IV: This M.Ed. program of study is for teachers who currently hold the Initial License and are being prepared for the Professional License. This option requires 36 credits. FIFTH YEAR PROGRAM OF STUDY
The fifth year program of study leads to a Master's degree in Elementary Education and the Professional License. Students who have completed the undergraduate program of study in Elementary Education at Merrimack that leads to the Initial License will be granted acceptance after meeting the program requirements.
