Friends of the Lynnfield Library
The Friends of the Lynnfield Public Library is a non-profit (510) (c) (3) organization that supports the many programs and activities of the Library both financially and through hundreds of volunteer hours each year. Through fundraising efforts, such as book sales and merchandise sales, the Friends have raised money for the Museum Pass Program, professional development for the staff, our feature film DVDs and adult and youth programs. For more information on how to get involved, contact Ann Decker, President at Ann.W.Decker@comcast.net or 781.334.3927 or to visit our website click here.

History of the Library
The first library in Lynnfield, called the Lynnfield Social Library, was established in 1795 with seventy subscribers or shareholders. The new Lynnfield Public Library opened on July 22, 1892 with a collection of 554 books in a room in the new Town Hall, the site of the present one.
In 1904 the library moved to its present location in what was a former school building dating from 1856. It is now the Children’s Room. At that time Lynnfield had a population of about 800, there were 700 books in the collection and the library was open 3 hours per week. In 1923 a branch library was built in south Lynnfield to better serve more of the community. The branch remained open until 1990 when the Board of Trustees voted to close it due to financial constraints.
The decade from 1950 to 1960 saw some of the biggest changes in Lynnfield as the country experienced a post World War II growth in population and building. The population increased from 3,925 in 1950 to 8,500 in 1960 and the library’s book collection expanded to 10,000. To accommodate this growth several library expansions and improvements occurred. In 1950 the wood stoves were removed and in 1959 a 700 square foot addition – what is now the area between the front door and the Children’s Room – was built. The Reading Room, the beautiful Palladian window and the mezzanine was added in 1967. The latest project in 1991 made the library ADA compliant with the addition of a ramp and an elevator.
Today, the library’s collection stands at 69,227 with access to over 3.1 million library items made available to our patrons through our membership in the North of Boston Library Exchange (NOBLE), a consortium with a current membership of twenty-eight public, college and special libraries.
