  • JAMA HIV/AIDS Resource Center -- This web site is designed as a resource for physicians and other health professionals.

  • Johns Hopkins AIDS Service -- Information and links to other HIV/AIDS sites, for professionals, patients and students. Includes an “Expert Questions and Answer Forum” for sending live questions to professionals.

  • HIV/AIDS Surveillance -- This site provides statistics on HIV/AIDS .

  • HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Service This web site is your central resource for federally approved treatment guidelines for HIV and AIDS.

  • UNAIDS -- This site is run by the United Nations and its subsidiaries including UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, and the World Bank. Here you will be able to do a keyword search to get abstracts and full text articles, both on the global level and by country. You will also find fact sheets, FAQs (frequently asked questions), graphics, and much more.

Alcoholism

  • Alcoholics Anonymous -- This agency focuses on treating alcoholism through group membership. The site includes an FAQ section, the AA's "44 questions", AA guidelines, information for professionals, directories to groups and how to start one, a look at teen drinking, and a list of available publications.

  • College Drinking -- This is a subdivision of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (listed below). It provides information on campus drinking for students, parents, administrators and counselors. Included are fact sheets and a section with information and statistics on the impact of excessive drinking on campus, for example; in terms of academic performance, crime, accidents and health.

  • National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) -- Sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, this may be the premier world site on the subject and offers many links on all aspects of abuse by specific substance. One will find everything from basic facts to full text treatments in written format (including digital books) and audio/video.

Alternative Press

  • Alternative Press -- The Alternative Press Center (APC) is a non-profit collective dedicated to providing access to and increasing public awareness of the alternative press. Founded in 1969, it remains one of the oldest self-sustaining alternative media institutions in the United States. For more than a quarter of a century, the Alternative Press Index has been recognized as a leading guide to the alternative press in the United States and around the world.

  • NewPages -- NewPages is the Portal of Independents! News, information and guides to independent bookstores, independent publishers, literary periodicals, alternative periodicals, independent record labels, alternative newsweeklies and more.

  • Association of alternative newsweeklies -- The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN) is the trade organization for the alternative newspaper business.   • ADA Home Page -- Americans With Disabilities Information and Technical Assistance. Look here for disability rights laws, regulations, design specifications, employment practices, publications, commonly asked questions, and many links to various government agencies.

  • ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities -- Here is a detailed source on specifications and standards for providing physical access in every sort of situation (entrances, drinking fountains, seating, etc.) for any sort of facility from businesses and clinics to restaurants and transportation. Included is a glossary of terminology and phrasing used in this field.

Animal Rights

  • Animal Rights Law Project -- This website contains materials written by Gary Francione, Anna Charlton, and students in the course on Animal Rights and the Law that Francione and Charlton have taught at Rutgers University School of Law for over a decade. Rutgers was the first law school in the United States to have animal rights law as part of the regular academic curriculum, and to award students academic credit not only for classroom work, but also for work on actual cases involving animal issues that were litigated by Francione, Charlton, and associated counsel. The course is offered every semester and is now called "Animal Rights: Theory and Practice."

  • Animal Concerns Community -- Network for Change is a collaboration between the EnviroLink Network, the Animal Concerns Community, the Sustainable Business Network and GreenMarketplace.com, who are working together to develop a comprehensive resource for individuals, organizations and businesses working for social and environmental change.

  • Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights -- The AVAR actively works toward the acquisition of rights for all nonhuman animals by educating the public and the veterinary profession about a variety of issues concerning nonhuman animal use. The AVAR is actively seeking reformation of the way society treats all nonhumans and an increase in environmental awareness, as well.

  • The American Association of Community College -- AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation's community colleges. The association represents more than 1,100 associate degree-granting institutions and some 10 million students. Their web page provides information on the Association's conferences, workshops and other activities, as well as current updates on legislation affecting education. The association has 19 affiliated councils representing community college professionals in a variety of fields.

  • Center for Community College Policy -- The Center, based at the Education Commission of the States in Denver, conducts research and analysis; serves as a clearinghouse for state officials, college leaders and the media on issues of community college policy at the state level; and organizes national, regional and state-level workshops around issues of community college policy.

  • Community College National Center for Community Engagement -- The Center is a leader in advancing programs and innovations that stimulate active participation of institutions in community engagement for the attainment of a vital citizenry.

  • Community College Research Center -- Housed in the Institute on Education and the Economy at Teachers College/Columbia University, the Community College Research Center's mission is to frame critical questions concerning the fundamental purposes, problems, and performance of community colleges, and to chart a course of strengthening scholarly research on the future of these institutions.   • Constituion FactsConstitution Facts web site provides the text of the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence plus facts about each of these documents.

  • U.S. Court This is a site “maintained by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts on behalf of the U.S. Courts.” It has an “Educational Outreach” page, http://www.uscourts.gov/ that includes a section on “Constitutional Day Resources September 16, 2005” with handouts and other materials that can be used in both the classroom and the courtroom.

  • The Library of Congress: American Memory This section of the library of Congress’ website contains a webpage on “Documents from the Continental Congress” and the Constitutional Convention 1774-1789”. This page has many links to many collections of documents within the library of Congress that deal with the Congress and the Constitution.

  • The Federal Register The official regulations from the U.S. Department of Education regarding the “Notice of Implementation of Constitution Day and Citizenship day on September 17 of Each Year” can be found here using it’s search engine.

  • CQ Researcher One of the databases that can be accessed through the Bunker Hill Community Library website, this database contains information on various aspects of the U.S. Constitution that can be found by doing a search.

  • The National Archives The national archives contain many historical U.S. government documents, including one on the Constitution of the United States. http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/constitution.html

  • Federated Resources for Educational Excellence This website includes a page on Constitution Resources that can be found at http://www.ed.gov/free/constitution/index.html. This page lists several web sites that contain information on the American Constitution, including a site which talks about how the history surrounding the creation of the Constitution and it’s amendments, as well as sites that have copies of the Federalist Papers. The information on these sites is free and available to all.

  • The Learning Page This website is by the library of Congress, and has a variety of information and topics for teachers to use in their classes, including a lesson plan called “In Congress Assembled: Continuity and Change in the Governing of the United States” http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpedu/lessons/constitu/conintro.html which are “a teaching unit on the Constitution, Congress, and current events” using documents from a variety of sources.

  • The U.S. Constitution Online This website was created and is maintained by Steve Mount. It contains a variety of information on the Constitution, including a section on some recent (within the past 15 years or so) amendments proposed by the various Congresses.

  • The Heritage Foundation Research Issues -- This right-wing think tank promotes conservative policy issues. The research page lists 30 topics with both current and archived research on each issue.

  • Project Vote Smart -- An excellent non-partisan source for background information and pro and con arguments on issues such as arts funding, crime, drug abuse, the environment, families, gender issues, gun control, human rights, immigration, terrorism, welfare, and many others.

  • RAND -- A nonprofit institution that helps improve policy and decision making through research and analysis. It's Hot Topics page discusses an assortment of current issues, and it's Research page offers information on 13 topics in which RAND specializes.

  • Almanac of Policy Issues -- Contains neutral background information on lots of controversial issues and links to news, articles, and associations on both sides of the issue.

  • Documents in the News -- This site from the University of Michigan provides a long list of issues that the government is concerned with.

  • National Issues -- This non-partisan issues-oriented website seeks to gather the best articles and research from leading think tanks, news sources, advocacy groups and individual policy analysts, and to present summary information on each topic as well as a compilation of experts' views on each of the issues.
