  • The National Adoption Information Clearinghouse -- A comprehensive resource on all aspects of adoption, is a service of the Children's Bureau, Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services. African-American Studies

  • Black Studies Online -- a reference and research guide to websites dealing with a variety of special topics like Africa, Civil Rights, Education, and the Arts; from the City Colleges of New York.
  • In Motion: The African-American Experience -- (Includes images, primary sources, and maps) Until recently, people of African descent have not been counted as part of America's migratory tradition. The transatlantic slave trade has created an enduring image of black men and women as transported commodities, and is usually considered the most defining element in the construction of the African Diaspora, but it is centuries of additional movements that have given shape to the nation we know today.

  • HIV/AIDS Surveillance -- This site provides statistics on HIV/AIDS .
  • HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Service This web site is your central resource for federally approved treatment guidelines for HIV and AIDS.
  • UNAIDS -- This site is run by the United Nations and its subsidiaries including UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, and the World Bank. Here you will be able to do a keyword search to get abstracts and full text articles, both on the global level and by country. You will also find fact sheets, FAQs (frequently asked questions), graphics, and much more.

Alcoholism

  • Alcoholics Anonymous -- This agency focuses on treating alcoholism through group membership. The site includes an FAQ section, the AA's "44 questions", AA guidelines, information for professionals, directories to groups and how to start one, a look at teen drinking, and a list of available publications.
  • College Drinking -- This is a subdivision of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (listed below). It provides information on campus drinking for students, parents, administrators and counselors. Included are fact sheets and a section with information and statistics on the impact of excessive drinking on campus, for example; in terms of academic performance, crime, accidents and health.
  • National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) -- Sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, this may be the premier world site on the subject and offers many links on all aspects of abuse by specific substance. One will find everything from basic facts to full text treatments in written format (including digital books) and audio/video.

Alternative Press

  • Alternative Press -- The Alternative Press Center (APC) is a non-profit collective dedicated to providing access to and increasing public awareness of the alternative press. Founded in 1969, it remains one of the oldest self-sustaining alternative media institutions in the United States. For more than a quarter of a century, the Alternative Press Index has been recognized as a leading guide to the alternative press in the United States and around the world.

Animal Rights

  • Animal Rights Law Project -- This website contains materials written by Gary Francione, Anna Charlton, and students in the course on Animal Rights and the Law that Francione and Charlton have taught at Rutgers University School of Law for over a decade. Rutgers was the first law school in the United States to have animal rights law as part of the regular academic curriculum, and to award students academic credit not only for classroom work, but also for work on actual cases involving animal issues that were litigated by Francione, Charlton, and associated counsel. The course is offered every semester and is now called "Animal Rights: Theory and Practice."

  • U.S. Court This is a site “maintained by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts on behalf of the U.S. Courts.” It has an “Educational Outreach” page, http://www.uscourts.gov/ that includes a section on “Constitutional Day Resources September 16, 2005” with handouts and other materials that can be used in both the classroom and the courtroom.
  • The Library of Congress: American Memory This section of the library of Congress’ website contains a webpage on “Documents from the Continental Congress” and the Constitutional Convention 1774-1789”. This page has many links to many collections of documents within the library of Congress that deal with the Congress and the Constitution.
  • The Federal Register The official regulations from the U.S. Department of Education regarding the “Notice of Implementation of Constitution Day and Citizenship day on September 17 of Each Year” can be found here using it’s search engine.

  • Almanac of Policy Issues -- Contains neutral background information on lots of controversial issues and links to news, articles, and associations on both sides of the issue.
  • Documents in the News -- This site from the University of Michigan provides a long list of issues that the government is concerned with.
  • National Issues -- This non-partisan issues-oriented website seeks to gather the best articles and research from leading think tanks, news sources, advocacy groups and individual policy analysts, and to present summary information on each topic as well as a compilation of experts' views on each of the issues.
  • Public Agenda Online -- The goal of this site is to help explain policy issues to the public in a balanced and easy-to-understand way.   • National Eating Disorders Association -- The NEDA is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to prevent eating disorders and provide treatment referrals to those suffering from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder and those concerned with body image and weight issues. This site provides educational resources for schools, health professionals, community organizations, and individuals.
  • National Eating Disorder Information Centre -- NEDIC is a Toronto-based, non-profit organization, established in 1985 to provide information and resources on eating disorders and weight preoccupation. NEDIC has a non-dieting, client-centered, feminist philosophy. Features of the site include a guide for family and friends, questions and answers, links to other online resources, a recommended reading list, and an eating disorder glossary.
  • Food and Nutrition Information Center -- The FNIC Resource Center provides a compilation of resources on eating disorders for the consumer. Materials on this list were recommended by eating disorder professionals or found on suggested reading lists of prominent organizations. Listings include brief summaries of each resource. The FNIC is part of the US Department of Agriculture.

  • The American Association of Community College -- AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation's community colleges. The association represents more than 1,100 associate degree-granting institutions and some 10 million students. Their web page provides information on the Association's conferences, workshops and other activities, as well as current updates on legislation affecting education. The association has 19 affiliated councils representing community college professionals in a variety of fields.
  • Center for Community College Policy -- The Center, based at the Education Commission of the States in Denver, conducts research and analysis; serves as a clearinghouse for state officials, college leaders and the media on issues of community college policy at the state level; and organizes national, regional and state-level workshops around issues of community college policy.

  • Community College Research Center -- Housed in the Institute on Education and the Economy at Teachers College/Columbia University, the Community College Research Center's mission is to frame critical questions concerning the fundamental purposes, problems, and performance of community colleges, and to chart a course of strengthening scholarly research on the future of these institutions.   • Council for the Study of Community Colleges -- CSCC, an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges, is the premier organization of university-based researchers and community college practitioners who further scholarship on the community college enterprise.   • Avoiding Plagiarism - This website is designed to help students and faculty develop strategies for knowing how to avoid accidental plagiarism. Research-based writing in American institutions, both educational and corporate, is filled with rules that writers, particularly beginners, aren't aware of or don't know how to follow. Gaining a familiarity of these rules, however, is critically important, as inadvertent mistakes can lead to charges of plagiarism, which is the uncredited use (both intentional and unintentional) of somebody else's words or ideas.
