LISTENING

  • Randall's ESL Listening Lab has dozens of exercises to help you with your listening comprehension. The listening activities are arranged at four different levels and range in level of difficulty from easy to very difficult. You can print a transcript of the passages you listen to and take quizzes. The exercises are interesting and often quite funny. There's even a section with Real Video to follow along with the dialogue.

  • We especially recommend the Short Listening Exercises!

  • Beginners should try: Numbers, R/L, Telling Time, Greetings, and Prices.
  • The intermediate level: Bus schedules, Directions, Ordering at Restaurants, More numbers, Pronunciation, Telephone conversations, G/V, F/V, and S/Sh.
  • The advanced level: US slang, Requests and Replies, Directions, Personality types, and Para-language.

  • At Englishlistening.com you can listen to many different short passages, print a transcript, and take quizzes on what you just heard.

  • Check out this great site for Reading and Listening exercises. Just click on the Listening and Speaking menu for a list of great activities. Our favorites are Listen Training on the Web, Weekly Idioms, Talk Radio, and the Listening Quizzes.

  • The Guide to Grammar and Writing is a wonderful site for students in advanced ESL through English 095. There is a comprehensive grammar index with explanations on everything from sentence and verb agreement to punctuation to run-ons and fragments. The quizzes on sentence structure are very helpful, particularly the "notorious confusables", which focus on words like (there/their/they're or who/whom)

Students in entry level and intermediate ESL should try Focus On Grammar for quizzes and grammar help. You can find it on the computers in the Learning Center and the Multi- Assistance Center!
