Keeping Up with the Times
Bunker Hill Community College’s New York Times Readership Program
With the start of the Spring 2012 semester, explore ideas about incorporating The New York Times into class assignments.
The New York Times College Readership Programs use newspapers and related resources to enhance the educational environment and overall college learning experience. It is designed to nurture and develop the next generation of leaders.
Widespread distribution of newspapers to convenient racks on campus and in common areas encourages students to pick up and read a newspaper on a regular basis. Studies show that ease of access is one of the top factors influencing student readership.
The newspaper readership program starts on January 23, 2012 and runs until May 11, 2012.
Monday through Thursday of each week, 130 copies of The New York Times will be distributed across the Charlestown campus (2nd floor of the B Building in the lobby & the first floor pit area of the C Building) while 30 copies will be distributed across the Chelsea campus (at the Information Desk). On Fridays, 50 copies will be distributed across the Charlestown campus. Newspapers are not delivered to Chelsea campus on Fridays.
Students will have the opportunity to stay current in world events, while faculty will have another vehicle to stimulate critical thinking through assignments and activities that also ‘foster a climate of civic engagement’ on campus.
