Welcome back! The Spring 2012 semester is upon us and the library is back to normal semester hours. There is a librarian here during all opening hours. Also, please do not forget to book Information Literacy Workshops at the library. Contact Andrew McCarthy at 617 228-2323 or email at ajmccart@bhcc.mass.edu.

Books by BHCC faculty authors are currently on display in the Library. Featured are Luke Salisbury, Richard Klayman and Elena Neva. They have been selected from the BHCC Archives which collects publications by BHCC faculty and staff. Other college faculty and staff are encouraged and welcomed to give the Library copies of their own publications to be added to the College's Archives, which are housed in the library.

The Fall semester of 2011 is just about done. Congratulations on finishing the semester; all of your classes, presentations, papers, and exams. We hope you have a great break, and we look forward to seeing you again during the 2012 Spring semester. We will be open from 8AM to 10PM today and tomorrow, but we will close at 5PM on December 23. We will be closed from December 24 to January 2 and will reopen on January 3.

Our hours from January 3 to January 22 are 9AM to 4PM Monday to Friday and closed on the weekend. We will also be closed on January 16 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Normal library hours resume on Monday, January 23, 2012. For normal hours, please refer to this website's homepage.

As we come to the end of the Fall semester, the library is still open for business. Please come to the library for quiet study, quiet study in groups (please use our front area, which we call the Monument area for this - you will know this area for its windows that overlook the Bunker Hill Monument), computer research (all of our computers connect directly to the library website where you will find 108 library databases), and books (we have physical books and electronic books (eBooks) which you can find through our book catalog accessible on our website).

We recently acquired a new DVD called "Waiting for Superman." This DVD was requested by one of BHCC's Faculty. You will find this DVD at the front of the library along with all of the other DVDs. It's call number is DVD LA212 .W35 2011

Please do not forget to use the library to its potential. If you need a place to study, we have an entire area that is for silent and quiet study. If you need a place to do research, we have many PCs for your use on a first come first serve basis. A librarian is here during all library opening hours to answer any questions you may have.

A Reminder to BHCC Faculty: The library information literacy workshop program is in full swing this semester. We have many openings in our schedule, so please consider a workshop here in the library for your class. Contact Andrew McCarthy to schedule. You can meet with a libararian to design a workshop that will help your students complete assignments and meet course goals and learning outcomes. A typical workshop includes a 30 minute library classroom session in the library classroom (E319) followed by 45 minutes of hands-on research using the library's computers. Workshops focus on teaching critical information literacy skills in the context of your course goals and assignments.

Welcome to the website of BHCC Library & Learning Commons for all of you who are new to the college. Welcome back to all of you who are returning to the college after the summer. We are now on our normal semester schedule of Monday to Friday from 8AM to 10PM and Saturday and Sunday from 8AM to 4PM. A librarian is available during all opening hours for help.

We have an extensive physical collection and an extensive electronic collection. The physical collection consists mainly of books and periodicals. The electronic collection consists of electronic databases, films, eBooks and eAudiobooks.

NEW DATABASE: NewsBank Local Newspapers
NewsBank provides full-text access to Springfield Republican (1/1988 to current) and Cape Cod Times (11/1998 to current). The Republican provides extensive coverage for Springfield and Western Massachusetts. The paper features news, opinion, sports, obituaries, arts & entertainment and business coverage. The Republican's main office is in Springfield, with news bureaus in Chicopee, Greenfield, Holyoke, Northampton, Palmerand and Westfield.The Cape Cod Times was first published in October 1936. The paper is published in Hyannis, Massachusetts, the largest of seven villages on Cape Cod and the commercial and transportation hub of the Cape. Access provided by the Massachusetts Library System.

The BHCC Library & Learning Commons is currently gearing up for the new academic year starting September 6. Our summer hours end this week on Aug. 26. Next week's library hours are 9AM to 4PM, Monday to Friday (Aug. 29 to Sept. 2). The library goes to its academic year hours starting on Sept. 6. NEW DATABASE: Food Science Source
This database provides cover to cover full-text coverage from over 1,400 food industry related publications Also included are over 1,000 market and food industry reports and tens of thousands of articles from other magazines and journals. This database is from Ebsco.

The BHCC library is proud to offer 50 new DVD titles from PBS. Recently added titles include the critically acclaimed Freedom Riders from American Experience, all five seasons of the influential Art:21 series, and a broad selection of NOVA documentaries. Titles also include selections from P.O.V and Independent Lens including "A Fish Story" which explores the recent economic and political struggles of Gloucester fishermen and their families. All DVDs are available for 3-day loan with a BHCC ID card. For questions about fair use and performance rights, please see a librarian or contact the library.

BOOK SWAP: The library now has a book swap set up next to the Lending Services desk. You will find two revolving book display racks filled with books. Please take a book and leave a book at the same time. These books are outside of the library collection.

USS Constitution Museum passes: The library now has 2 passes for the USS Constitution Museum, which is located right here in Charlestown. These passes are the property of the library and must be returned to the library after use.

Furniture: The library is in the midst of a new furniture installation for the public computer area. Most of the public computers are out of service while this installation happens. We do have seven computers that patrons can access now, four at a table and three standing up. The installation should be completed by the week of July 4th.

Fourth of July: Monday is the Fourth of July which marks the day that the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence, which was a declaration of independence from Great Britain. The original day was July 4, 1776. For more information, please check out:

Tomorrow is Bunker Hill Day which commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill which actually took place on Breed's Hill. It was a battle of the American Revolution and took place on June 17, 1775.

This database is great for research papers and debate preparation.

Do not forget to seek out a librarian if you have any questions or comments during the Summer months. The library is open Monday to Thursday from 8AM to 10PM and Fridays 8AM to 5PM. We are closed weekends during the Summer.
