Using the Bunker Hill Community College Library
Before getting started on a search for information here or at any library, check out the options (tools and methods) available to you. Avoid falling into the habit of relying too heavily on computers to access documents, books and other materials. Power outages, a limited number of PC's, software and hardware problems, etc. means it makes sense to know how to find your way around a library using your wits as your primary tool.
Use class assignments and other information needs from all areas of your life to:
- Find books using the Library of Congress category list, subject heading guides, bibliographies, and by browsing the shelves.
- Find magazines using the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature and other specialty paper indexes within various disciplines.
- Use general reference materials like encyclopedias, dictionaries, journal article bibliographies and biographies for statistical and other specific, fact-based inquiries.
When using both paper and electronic sources, be sure to cite the where and how of your information retrieval. Intellectual property rights are as important as ever. Acquaint yourself with copyright issue and know how to identify and use format guidelines and style manuals consistent with the way you are using different types of information.
