The following is meant to be used as support material related to a library instruction session conducted by a library instructor and an BHCC course instructor.
After attending the library workshop session the learner will:
- be able to explain how using electronic mail facilitates the handling of information for academic purposes.
- be able to create his or her own Web based E-mail account using Eudora.
- be able to access his or her Eudora E-mail account.
- be able to manipulate options in his or her account to automatically retain sent messages.
- be able to write and send messages to other E-mail accounts and to their own account.
- be able to add, remove, or edit entries in the Eudora Address Book.
- be able to send an E-mail message with an attachment.
- be able to create folders.

Steps to Creating and Accessing your Eudora E-mail
Setting Up an Account
- Type in the Eudora Web Address in the location window of your browser.
- Select "Sign-Up". You are now at the Registration Form: Login Information
- Fill in your User Name in the Login Information window. Follow the format that Eudora suggests and type in: first name.lastname eventually your full E-mail address will be firstname.lastname@eudoramail.com An example User Name: vivian.talksalot [Note: if you get a message that your User Name is already in use then add a number to it like: evelyn.emailer7]
- Type in your Password following the directions on the right side of the monitor screen from Eudora. Remember to use something that you can easily remember and use a combination of letters and numbers for better online security. For example, you could use the Password: 55pumpkin5
- In the Verify Password window type in your Password again. Using our example above you would type in 55pumpkin5
- Enter the correct time zone into the Choose a time zone window: [We are in Eastern Standard Time].
Registration Form: Step 2: Information About Yourself
Enter information in all required fields. [Other E-mail Address is not a required field.]
Registration Form Step 3: Review and Submit
Click on the Done button. This will register you unless it comes up with a message that your User Name is already in use. [If you get this message either select the choices Eudora offers or go back to the original Registration Form and type in a newly created User Name and re-click on the Done button.]
Finally you will be at the Eudora E-mail "Welcome/Congratulations" screen where a window appears with your User Name and a blank window enter your Password into the blank window. This will bring you to your beginning E-mail page.
Accessing and Using your E-mail

Open your Browser (Netscape, Windows Explorer, etc.)

Type in the following Web address into the Location Window to open Eudora:

Enter your User Name and Password and click on the Login button.
You will now be at the initial page of your E-mail where you can choose to read messages sent to you, compose a message to send out, modify entries in your address book, create a folder, sort prior messages into folders, and other options.
To create a "sent mail" and a "signature" file go to Options at the left side of the screen and select Sent Mail and then select Signature for your signature file.
Electronic mail has its own protocols. For current information on E-mail you may want to try searching for articles on, for example, "E-mail and etiquette," using the following online subscription services available from the BHCC Library:

EBSCOhost -- Use this link to EBSCOhost from off campus. Then enter your 14-digit barcode number from the back of your BHCC ID and your last name.

EBSCOhost indexes over 3000 periodicals (magazines, newspapers, journals), and provides articles from these publications many which are available full-text (the entire article). Within EBSCOhost select MasterFILE Premier, for articles mostly from general interest magazines (such as Time or Newsweek) and Academic Search Elite for mostly journal articles.
Infotrac Web is a gateway, which provides access to seven full-text databases on subjects ranging from literature and literary criticism to business and technology research. Within InfoTrac Web select the General Reference Center (Magazine Index) for articles from mainly general interest magazines and Expanded Academic ASAP for articles from mainly journals.
