Tips for Teachers
Since public librarians know that students use both their school library
media centers and public libraries to research assignments, we would like to
offer some suggestions to assist teachers in helping their students make good
use of the resources available at the Beverly Public Library.
The Beverly Public Library has materials for all ages and interests and
therefore has a limited number of resources on any one topic. Our role is to
support rather than duplicate the school library media center's curriculum
based collection.
When Assigning Topics
- Inform your library well in advance. It may be that additional
resources can be gathered from other libraries.
- Investigate the availability of materials before giving assignments
that require library research.
- Stress to your students the importance of writing down their
assignments and bringing them to the library. Make sure they understand the
assignment.
- Assign broad topics or a choice of topics to ensure that fewer
students are searching for materials on any one subject.
- Be flexible in the number of resources required.
- Encourage the students to use a variety of sources and formats, such
as books, the Internet , and encyclopedias.
- Consider assigning co-operative projects.
- Try to assign seasonal and holiday projects well in advance.
