Ramadan: August 1, 2011 – August 30, 2011

The holy month of Ramadan is observed during the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, the time of year when it is believed that the Holy Quran was received by the Prophet Muhammad. This observance is marked by fasting during the daylight hours, and prayer and studying of the Quran. When the fast ends on the first day of the month of Shawwal, it is celebrated for three days in a joyous holiday called Id-al-Fitr, the Feast of Fast Breaking.

Bastille Day — On July 14, 1789, the people of Paris rose up and marched on the Bastille, a state prison that symbolized the absolutism of the French monarchy. The storming of the Bastille symbolizes liberty, democracy and the struggle against oppression.
